The Sligo Community Training Centre (CTC), in partnership with Mayo, Sligo and Leitrim Education and Training Board (MSLETB), celebrated the official opening of its new Car Maintenance Training Facility and the launch of a dedicated Car Maintenance course at a special event today.
Minister of State at the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Marian Harkin formally opened the facility. The Minister praised the programme saying it provides young people with
‘the skills, training, and opportunities they need to develop fulfilling careers,’ She described it as a wonderful example of how local training centres, learners, and employers can work together to build brighter futures.’”
Speaking at the launch, Gavin Dykes, General Manager of Sligo CTC, said:
“This facility represents a real investment in our learners. The new car maintenance programme opens doors for young people who want to take the first step towards a career in the automotive industry.”
Tom Grady, Chief Executive of MSLETB, highlighted the strategic importance of the initiative, noting:
“The strength of this project lies in its ability to respond to the needs of learners and local employers. It provides the skills and confidence young people need to progress into apprenticeships and sustainable careers.”
The event was attended by learners, tutors, board members, local representatives, and invited guests, and learner who spoke about his experience on the course.
Since 1984, Sligo CTC has supported more than 2,000 learners, offering QQI-certified training in areas such as computers, catering, sports & recreation, and hairdressing. The new car maintenance programme reflects the growing interest among young people in careers in the automotive sector and strengthens the Centre’s role in preparing learners for further education and employment.
