Mayo, Sligo and Leitrim Education and Training Board (MSLETB) is proud to celebrate the success of St. Joseph’s Community College, Charlestown, who were awarded the Education Award at the ETB Week 2025 Excellence Awards hosted by Education and Training Boards Ireland (ETBI).
The winning project explores the powerful and often untold stories of revolutionary women from East Mayo and South Sligo, shedding light on their vital roles during the War of Independence and the Civil War. This remarkable initiative has been led by History Teacher and Project Coordinator, Ann Leydon, alongside student participants Alice Flannery, Leah Honan, Lucy Tiernan, Mia Gallagher, Ethel Duffy, Adrianna Gallagher, Cliona Cullen, and James Breheny.
“This project not only honours the legacy of local women whose contributions have been historically overlooked, but also empowers students to connect deeply with their heritage through storytelling and historical research,” said Mary Madden, Director of Schools, MSLETB. “We are incredibly proud of the team at St. Joseph’s for this outstanding achievement.”
In addition to this success, the MSLETB EDI Programme Team was named runner-up in the Equality Award category for its work on the new Level 5 Specific Purpose Certificate in Workplace Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. This groundbreaking programme addresses a key gap in accredited EDI training at this level and reflects MSLETB’s commitment to fostering inclusive learning environments and workplaces.
MSLETB also congratulates The BEY Project, UBU Ballyhaunis Foróige, who were shortlisted for the Youth Services Award. Their innovative Thamari Storybook initiative brought together 22 young people from India and Ireland, using storytelling, collaboration, and digital tools to create cross-cultural understanding.
These awards were part of the ETBI Excellence Awards Ceremony, a key highlight of ETB Week 2025, which was celebrated with a national event in Croke Park, Dublin. The week recognises the innovation, inclusivity, and impact of ETB’s across the country, and MSLETB is honoured to have been so well represented on this national stage.
