Energy, talent, and community pride filled the Tubbercurry Library and Youth Café as over 60 people gathered to celebrate the official launch of the Foróige UBU South Sligo Youth Project.

The event, hosted by Foróige in partnership with the Mayo, Sligo and Leitrim Education and Training Board (MSLETB), featured live youth performances, interactive showcases, exhibitions, and a special guest appearance by Megan McCormack, Senior Sligo Footballer and Sligo Rose of Tralee. Megan spoke about resilience, confidence, and the importance of creating spaces where young people feel seen, supported, and proud of who they are.

The celebration highlighted the creativity, leadership, and potential of young people from Tubbercurry, Ballymote, Gurteen, and Coolaney who take part in the UBU project.

“Today was more than a launch—it was a celebration of the courage, creativity, and community spirit of the young people we work with,” said Deirdre Gallagher, Programme Coordinator for South Sligo UBU.The turnout and support from families, partners, and the wider community means so much to them. They felt proud, heard, and valued—and that’s exactly what UBU is all about.”

Participants performed original music and spoken word pieces, displayed artwork, and led tours of their youth spaces.

One 15-year-old participant said, “I never thought I’d get up and sing in front of people, but today I did it. I’m really proud of myself.” Another added, “UBU helped me find my voice. It’s more than a place to hang out—it’s a place where I belong.”

Peter Egan, Director of Further Education and Training with MSLETB, praised the project and the launch event:

“The Foróige UBU project in South Sligo is a vital service, particularly in rural areas. It provides a safe, inclusive space where young people can express themselves, build confidence, and develop important life skills. Today’s event clearly demonstrated the impact of youth work at its best—empowering, uplifting, and deeply rooted in community.”

Launched in 2022, South Sligo UBU is part of the national UBU Your Place Your Space scheme operated by the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth. The project supports over 100 young people aged 10+ across South Sligo with out-of-school activities focused on personal development, wellbeing, creativity, and inclusion.

The programme is delivered by Foróige in partnership with MSLETB, with tailored supports for young people facing socio-economic and developmental barriers.

A parent attending the event shared: “Since my daughter joined UBU, she’s become more confident, open, and happy. She finally feels like she has her own space.
